Gevril Watches History & Background
It would be the oldest watchmaker in the world if we could go back to the beginning of Gevril’s history.
The company’s origins date back to the mid-18th-century, thanks to Jacques Gevril, a skilled Swiss watchmaker who founded the company. He was an apprentice at the time and specialized in pocket watches, clocks, smart watches and wristwatches.
Gevril and Pierre Jaquet – Droz, his close friend and colleague, traveled to Madrid in 1758 for business talks. The two men met King Ferdinand VI, who presented a collection of intricate musical automata to them. The king was so impressed that he purchased all of them.
Gevril decided that he would stay in Spain to continue his excellent reputation as a watchmaker, even though Jaquet Droz returned home the next year. He was soon appointed Royal Watchmaker by the same King, the most prestigious title at the time.
Gevril’s rich tradition was not ended by Francis’s death. The legacy of Francis was carried on by the next generation of watchmakers, Moyse Gevril (and Daniel Gevril). They both made lasting contributions to Swiss watchmaking. Some of Gevril’s pocket watches were considered collector items. One is kept in the Museum Geneve, while another is part the Wilsdorf collection – the founders Rolex.
Gevril was long gone from watch enthusiasts’ lips and from the horological world. This was until 1990s, when a Swiss watch distributor bought rights to Gevril’s name. Gevril timepieces were first displayed at Basel Fair 1995, which was a very popular industry event.
The brand’s true revival began in 2001. A Swiss businessman who was passionate about watches bought the Gevril brand that year. He and his team had one goal from the beginning: To return the brand to the top in terms of craftsmanship.
Gevril’s headquarters were relocated to New York after the takeover. This was the residence of the new owner. Gevril Horlogerie was still kept in Switzerland as the brand’s manufacturing facility. Switzerland is home to about 6,000 Gevril mechanical ideal smart watches each year.
